Lawsons are proud to take part in Plastic Free July, which aims to raise awareness of the problems with single-use disposable plastic and challenges people to do something about it.

We’re targeting the top four takeaway items – water bottles, drinking straws, coffee cups and shopping bags – and replacing them with reusable or recyclable versions.

Water Bottles: 38.5 million plastic bottles are used in the UK every day, and only 50% of them are recycled. Take a reusable bottle out with you, and refill it at one of the growing number of water stations being set up across the UK including all branches of Costa Coffee. Our range of water bottles includes stylish stainless steel from Chillys and Built, and practical phthalate and BPA-free from Sistema.

Drinking Straws: Plastic straws are often added to drinks automatically, so in cafes and bars ask for your drink without a straw. For home and parties, switch to our 100% organic compostable paper straws, printed with edible soy ink, with a waterproof layer of beeswax. We no longer stock plastic straws.

Takeaway Coffee Cups: The average lifespan of a single-use cup is 13 minutes, and each year 100 billion of them end up in landfill. Help reduce that by taking your own reusable cup to your favourite coffee shop – some even offer a discount! We have many different types, from recyclable bamboo Ecoffee cups to Stojo collapsible cups that fit in your pocket.

Shopping Bags: Lawsons currently charges 5p for single-use carrier bags, and we hope that by 2020 we will no longer have them at all. All the money we collect goes to local charities. Please choose to refuse single-use bags – we have great alternatives including bags made from recycled cotton and recycled plastic, or you could go retro style with a shopping trolley!
