We all know what Black Friday means, it means sales, offers and bargains. However you may not know when or how it all started. Most of us will associate it with the sales weekend that follows the American celebration of Thanksgiving and it usually kickstarts the Christmas shopping buzz.
Black Friday actually stemmed from a financial crisis. In September 1869 the US gold market plummeted and the actions of two financiers left them bankrupt. A few years later, this time of year became associated with the name Black Friday.
Apparently, retailers would record their accounts by hand noting profits in black and losses in red. It is believed that shops would stay in the red throughout most of the year until the day after thanksgiving, when consumers would buy discounted products, putting retailers back into profit.
In 2010, a very well known online retailer introduced the UK to Black Friday offers and and since then, more and more retailers have followed the craze and seized the opportunity to gain sales whilst offering their customers hard to resist discounts. Black Friday is officially Friday 27th November this year, however. over the last few years many retailers have extended their day of deals, to the whole weekend, whole week or even longer periods.
